The School District of Sturgeon Bay is a unified school district serving the majority of residents in the City of Sturgeon Bay as well as a portion of the Town of Sevastopol along Bay Shore Drive, which runs north of the city along the Bay of Green Bay. The City of Sturgeon Bay has approximately 9,500 residents. Located in Door County, our community has amenities, support from both profit and not-for-profit organizations, natural beauty, and an overall quality of life that most districts and communities cannot offer.
The district is made up of four schools housed in three buildings within the city of Sturgeon Bay. Located on the west side, Sawyer Elementary School houses Grades PK through 2. The east side is home to Sunrise Elementary School (Grades 3 through 5), and our largest building, T.J. Walker Middle School (Grades 6 through 8) and Sturgeon Bay High School (Grades 9 through 12). The middle and high school building also abuts our district greenhouse, which is managed and maintained by our food service department in conjunction with students via Family & Consumer Science courses.
Historically, Sturgeon Bay High School was the first high school in the county and was established in 1917. The first graduating class in 1920 had 3 members. Since that time we have grown--our graduating classes now typically have 100-plus members. The current high school was built in 1966 and the middle school was added in 1981. Sunrise and Sawyer Elementary Schools were constructed in 1954 and 1996, respectively. All buildings have undergone recent large-scale renovations due to a capital referendum. District statistics for 2021-22 include enrollment of 1,050, a graduation rate of 96.2%, and 17.3% open enrollment.
